Latil's Landing at Houmas House Reviews (1)
Tasting Menu Review
by Politiceaux on 2/13/11
Last night I brought my girlfriend to Latil's Landing for her birthday dinner. We decided to do it right and get the chef's tasting menu and it certainly did not disappoint.

The 7 courses were:

Tower of Jumbo Lump Crabmeat Jumbo lumps of Louisiana blue crab, tossed in basil dressing layered with mango and avocado salsa Duckhorn Vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley California, 2008

The crab was really nice and tasty, the basil dressing complimented it quite well. The avocado and mango worked really nice. Great starter.

I'm not a big white wine fan really, but this Sauvignon from Duckhorn was great. Not overly sweet and a bit dry.

Bisque of Bittersweet Plantation Fleur de Lis Cheese and Oysters Pontchartrain Vineyards, Le Trolley Blanc du Bois, Covington Louisiana, 2006

I actually subbed this for the curried crawfish and pumpkin bisque. The soup I had was incredible. My girlfriend got the cheese and oyster bisque. It was quite tasty, but I'm glad I went with the pumpkin. This wine wasn't my favorite of the evening by any means, but lady politiceaux seemed to enjoy it.

Butter Poached Lobster Served on risotto of baby tomatoes and butternut squash and vanilla fume Trenel, Pouilly Fuisse, France, 2005

The star of the night! The lobster was cooked perfectly and the risotto was phenomenal. Seasoned well, and the crawfish in the risotto, tomatoes and butternut squash all worked really, really well together. Oustanding.

Cosmopolitan Sorbet Cranberry sorbet topped with orange scented Grey Goose vodka

A nice palate cleanser. Good presentation in a colored sugar-rimmed martini glass.

Tournedo of Filet Mignon Grilled medallions of beef tender-loin set atop horseradish yukon gold potatoes and medley of asparagus, topped with herb glace´ Golden Eye, Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley California, 2003

The filet was seasoned well and cooked to a perfect medium rare. It was actually larger than I expected, which was a nice surprise. The horseradish mashed potatoes and asparagus were both great as well. This pinot was my favorite wine of the night. Not overly sweet and complimented the steak well. Very nice.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich Triple Cream Brie grilled cheese sandwich garnished with kumquat chutney Black Castle, Blau Frankish, Matraalja Hungry, 2007

The kumquat chutney in this dish really paired well with the brie. Quality cheese for sure. The wine pairing was good, in my opinion. Really nice toasted bread.

Poach pear placed on chocolate mousse and red velvet powder, topped with cranberry “caviar”, and bitter- sweet chocolate gelato Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, Demi-Sec, Reims France

Phenomenal end to the meal. The pear was outstanding. The red velvet powder was a nice touch with each item Good wine.

Overall, a wonderful dining experience. I won't hesitate to return. I will probably be ordering from the regular menu next time, but am really glad that I had the tasting menu.

Worth the $385? That's really hard to say on a meal for only two. It was a really memorable night spent with a beautiful woman and fantastic food though. I know she loved it, and I did as well.

Try this gem out if you get the chance.
